What is one hobby or interest you have that might surprise your students?

I’m a documentary junkie, I love a good documentary regardless of the subject. Nature, History, Crime, Music, Sports, in English, or with subtitles. If it’s intriguing, sign me up!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in dance?

Keep fighting for it. Just because dance doesn’t come naturally to you at first doesn’t mean it can’t become natural for you over time. As long as you keep working at it, going to class, practicing at home, and giving yourself the grace to mess up along the way, one day you’ll see how much you’ll grow and improve from it. If you keep that in mind and find the beauty in the journey you will become an amazing dancer.

Who is your biggest influence in the dance industry, and how have they impacted your career?

Luam, Andye J, and Candace Brown (Sorry I couldn’t pick one!). They are all women of color who are innovators and shine a bright light in the dance industry that is just undeniable. I’ve learned so much from them either one-on-one or in a small intimate class setting, and the knowledge they’ve shared with me as a student has gone beyond just dance allowing me to feel more comfortable in my skin as a dancer.
